PREFACE TO REVISED EDITION

Great changes have taken place in the world and in the lives of all its people since the first edition of this book appeared. These changes make the responsibility of those interested in human life more serious and more important than it has ever been before. One hesitates to think that anything one may write can make any significant contribution to the solution of the many problems of human welfare, but one can, at least, write with live human problems in mind. In that spirit the present revision was undertaken.

Reviewers of the first edition of this book were good enough to say that it had greater possibilities for use by regular college classes than I had claimed for it. This point has been kept in mind in the preparation of the new edition, and it is hoped that not only « professional workers » but college students as well may find something of value within its pages.

The literature of Child Psychology has increased enormously since the first appearance of this book ; to the original citations, therefore, most of which have been retained, the revised edition has added nearly 700 references dated since 1940. Additional plates, tables, and figures have been included, as well, in the hope of making the text clearer and more meaningful, and new illustrative material, drawn from my continuing clinical experience, has been added.
