Organizing Principles and Core Scientific Issues

This congress aims to advance scientific excellence in psychiatry, with a bio-psycho-social emphasis. It will reflect the richness of our diverse world, with an emphasis on the European and inter-continental crossroads, and will promote international collaboration at all levels, emphasizing World Psychiatric Association-World Health Organization perspectives. By implementing the overall theme of the congress, “Psychiatry : Uniqueness and Universality”, in various theoretical and practical aspects of psychiatry, as may be seen in the List of Topics, this congress will advance the strategic plan of the World Psychiatric Association. The Young Psychiatrists Council and Fellowship Program and the expansion of international and national CME credits will help to optimize continuing professional development. Special emphasis will be given to promoting the participation of World Psychiatric Association Member Societies and Scientific Sections, World Psychiatric Association Affiliated Associations and mental health organizations sharing the aims of the World Psychiatric Association.

Practical and theoretical issues in psychiatry, especially from the perspective of harmonizing the universal scientific knowledge with the uniqueness of care for every human being, will be focused on in the scientific program. Some highlights of the scientific program will cover the following themes : International Classification and Diagnostic Systems ; International collaboration on psychiatric research ; Mental health policies and services ; Collaboration among mental health workers, mental health users and care givers ; Universal knowledge, unique needs : joint research projects ; Conflicts of interest in psychiatry ; Helsinki Mental Health Act : steps and problems in implementation ; Continental collaborations : Europe, Africa, Australasia and Americas ; Recent developments in Neuroscience ; Mental Health in the process of European Union ; How the EU funds can be mobilized for Mental Health ; State-of-the-art in psychiatric treatments ; Combination of psychopharmacology with psychotherapies.
